The 2010 Union Shield Cent represents the first issue of the newly redesigned Lincoln Cent series. Following the excitement surrounding the prior year’s four Bicentennial designs, anticipation for the permanent new design was high.
The Shield Cents first appeared in circulation in Puerto Rico in mid-January 2010. Some of the coins were received in change for retail transactions and some collectors were lucky enough to find rolls of the new coins available at banks. These initial releases were in high demand since they appeared before the official launch ceremony and more widespread distribution.
The official launch ceremony was held on February 11, 2010, the day before the 201st anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The ceremony took place at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum where approximately 1,000 people attended. The new coins were officially presented to the public and attendees have the opportunity to purchase rolls for face value at a coin exchange.
In the spring, the United States Mint will offer 2010 Union Shield Cent Two Roll Sets. This product will include one 50-coin roll from the Philadelphia Mint and one 50-coin roll from the Denver Mint. The 2010-S Proof Union Shield Cent will be included in the 2010 Proof Set and 2010 Silver Proof Set. Satin finish 2010-P and 2010-D Union Shield Cents will be included in the 2010 Uncirculated Mint Set.
