The Union Shield Cent was first released in 2010, following the four different designs issued in the prior year to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s Bicentennial. The new design is intended to be emblematic of Lincoln’s preservation of the union, and is expected to be used as the reverse design for the one cent coin for the foreseeable future.
